An Australian minister has admitted plans for the Australian Government to steal thousands of UK workers to fill vacancies across the country.

Police and Defence Industry Minister Paul Papalia has launched the campaign which will aim to put British workers into close to 31,000 roles in Western Australia.

Papalia promised those who took the leap would be “taken care of”, joking: “Many of our ancestors were sent from the UK to Australia as convicts. Now, it would be a crime not to make the move.”

Among the professions that urgently need more workers are teaching, healthcare and policing.

Nurses and secondary teachers are paid more in Western Australia on average compared to other Australian states.

They are also paid significantly more than they are in the UK, with salaries reaching as much as 50 per cent higher than an average salary in the UK.

The average registered nurse in the UK is paid £30,586, compared to £49,131 in Western Australia.

The average driller in the UK receives a salary of £29,66, but in Australia drillers see a 273 per cent increase at salary which on average is £82,498.

Minister Papalia said: “We are here to steal your workers by offering them a better life in one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Western Australia is a fantastic place to live and work.

“Our wages are higher and our cost of living is lower. Our health system is world class. You will be taken care of.

The campaign will offer those interested better wages, a lower cost of living and multiple housing choices, in a bid to make the Australian lifestyle as attractive as possible.

The Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement was signed in 2021 and aimed to strengthen relationships between the nations.

It aimed to eliminate tariffs on over 99 per cent of Australian goods exported to the UK.

It is set to come into force later this year and allow UK citizens a smoother transition to working in Australia.

Papalia continued: “Most of Perth’s population lives a short drive from the beach, where parking is free. There are no tolls on our roads.

“We don’t have anything close to what would be considered a traffic jam by UK standards.

“And if you don’t want to drive, public transport is also capped. The most you’ll ever pay for a one way ticket anywhere is £2.86.

“That’s all it will cost you to get a train from the airport to the city centre.”
